On Aug. 7, Calvert County Public Schools appointed Dr. Marcus J. Newsome, the 2025-2026 interim superintendent. The departure of former Superintendent Dr. Andraè Townsel left a vacancy in this position for the 2025-2026 school year, which Newsome proudly stepped into.
Townsel had served as Superintendent of CCPS since July 2022. Until he accepted a leadership position in the Hartford, Connecticut school system. Townsel still had one year left on his contract with Calvert, but he was announced as Hartford’s new superintendent on July 1st and resigned from CCPS. He was picked from a group of over 40 applicants. In a public statement, Townsel expressed his deep gratitude to Calvert County, and how this community has been a blessing to him. His decision left the Calvert County Board of Education seeking to take its next steps.
Dr. Newsome has a strong background in education and leadership and has previously served as superintendent in three school districts. He received the FBI Community Service Award and currently serves as President of the National Bible and Seminary and Senior Advisor at Benchmark Education. Dr. Newsome is also a published author of Breakthrough Leadership, Out of Crisis, and Transcend. He is an ordained minister and held a faculty role at Harvard University.
Dr. Newsome is committed to having a smoothly run 2025-2026 school year and expressed in his introduction letter that he is excited and honored to serve. He also expressed his commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to “build on the district’s strong foundation while laying groundwork for a successful long-term future.”
