Calvert volleyball’s regular season has come to an end. In the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference, Calvert came out on top, sweeping 12 out of the 13 teams, 3-0. Their final regular-season game against Leonardtown drew a packed gym, as it was Calvert’s senior night and Leonardtown was undefeated. Calvert kept their heads held high, as they were also undefeated in SMAC, and won 3-0 and finishing the regular season undefeated in the conference.
Calvert had a strong first month of volleyball. Facing McDonough and Patuxent first, they started the season with a bang. After, they played Huntingtown and Northern in the same week, two teams known for their impressive skills. Calvert showed grit, sweeping Huntingtown 3-0 despite Huntingtown gaining an eight-point lead in the third set. The next game against Northern also drew a rowdy, packed crowd. Calvert had the lead 2-0, but Northern had a comeback, taking them to a fifth set. Despite this fallback, Calvert pulled through with a 3-2 win. After this game, each SMAC game was a 3-0 win.
Last season, Calvert went 11-2 in the SMAC, losing to Leonardtown and Northern. This shows they have made significant growth as a team, as they dominated each opponent this year. Their strong offense and scrappy defense has helped them in every game. Outside hitter, sophomore, Bailey Gosheff is currently leading the team in kills this season, followed by the other outside hitter, senior, Raegan Oursler. Consistent, aggressive hitters are key to success in this game, and that is just what Calvert has this year.
Unfortunately, Calvert’s 2024 season ended in the state semi-finals against Williamsport. In 2023, they fell short in the State finals against Centennial, both strong teams competing for another shot at the 2A championship this year. However, the Cavaliers’ intensity may bring more obstacles for these teams. These Cavaliers are determined to go all the way this year and come out on top, as shown by their gameplay.
Their next step is the playoffs, and from the looks of the regular season, it is looking promising. Their hard work day in and day out is starting to pay off. Come out and support your Lady Cavaliers Friday, October 31st, as they take their next steps into the season.
