May 1 has a bittersweet ring to it for seniors going off to college next year. Decision Day commemorates the last day students have to pay their deposit for their college of choice, but it can also be viewed as the end point of the stress that choosing a college can bring. Here at CHS, Decision Day was a celebration full of games, snacks, and photo opportunities to celebrate even more.
Walking into the aux gym, there were tables set up with an array of snacks and cookies for students to choose. Another little station included different questions seniors could answer like “Who is the best teacher at CHS?” or “What is one piece of advice you would give to underclassmen?” Games like KanJam and Cornhole had a spot towards the back of the gym with people already up and playing with their friends. The photo opportunity near the front had a cavalier background and plenty of CHS themed props to choose from to snap a picture. Ms. Jessica Piatt even had seniors film a cute TikTok where each student revealed the college that they were attending on their shirt.
From a senior’s perspective, as I am also counting down the days until my final bell at CHS, this event meant a lot to me. My friends and I have spent a lot of time under the stress of picking a future college, and this reminded me of how exciting this next chapter will be. Playing games with peers that I do not talk to so often and chatting with some that I see every day was a last hurrah in a lot of ways.
The students of Calvert High truly are lucky to have a group counselor that are so dedicated to making days like these so special.
