The Christmas season brings the world a plethora of holiday cheer every year. Visiting with family, presents, and Christmas music are all Christmas traditions we know and love. However, there seems to be some discrepancy over when in the year Frank Sinatra’s White Christmas is allowed to start playing.
While I start playing the holiday jingles right after Halloween, there is some controversy surrounding celebrating Christmas early. While some people start decorating for Christmas on November 1, others feel that it is not appropriate until after Thanksgiving. I look at it like this; there are people who don’t want Christmas thrown in their face right after another commercialized holiday, and there are people who put up their trees and stockings before the first week of November is over.
Personally, I feel most aligned with the latter party. I love playing Christmas music as soon as it gets chilly, plugging in the lights around the house to remind me of my childhood holidays, and decorating the tree with my mother. The earlier you put it up, the longer you can enjoy it. What’s the point of spending hours putting up decorations only to enjoy it for a few short weeks and then have to put it away again?
In my humble opinion, the buildup of Christmas is much more enjoyable than Christmas day itself. What’s the holiday season without the suspense of waiting? The scrambling for presents, making Christmas cookies and desserts with family and friends, and holiday parties all leading up to an almost lack-luster, anti-climactic day to me. I would rather have the Christmas season last two months long and enjoy the buildup for as long as possible rather than try and enjoy a day that doesn’t live up to the hype.
